Thank you very much to Wilhelm Mester for sharing this photo to our Facebook group. This Rolls Royce Silver Shadow car 52 was driven by Bill Bengry in the 1970 World Cup Rally.
Daily Mirror World Cup Rally 1970 London – Mexico City. After the rally, some vehicles were supposed to be brought back to the UK by ship. A dockworkers strike meant that the ship could not be unloaded. So it was sent to Cuxhaven, Germany – my hometown. The cars stood here with us for a few weeks and were a real attraction for us young boys.
According to Tony Devenport commenting about the Rolls Royce
It went back to Leominster and when Bill was made Mayor he used it as his Mayor car still with the exhausts across the roof the man was a legend.
I remember the car well and Bill Bengry. He very kindly came to our assistance when trying to improve the setting on the two twin downdraft Solexes on our Beach Buggy (car 50) at Dover at the start of the World Cup Rally. A rather nice sporting gesture which was much appreciated. He was of course familiar with the VW engine having rallied in Beetles.
